The Language of Gestures

2010

Textiles are imbued with the ability to convey notions of representation and identity. Across cultures, color and pattern adorn the body to convey regional, national, and even personal heritage. As a fiber artist, I am interested in the methods through which textiles communicate personal meaning through a visual, yet tactile, language.

In my work I seek to create a visual language; a language rooted in gesture. My work is the process of recording actions; records that in turn communicate intention. As a stitch line moves across the surface of fabric it becomes the evidence of a gesture made by the hand. It is through these actions that the body becomes a tool for communication. Whether it is evident through the body's engagement of fabric as it is adorned and manipulated through movement; or in the lasting impressions left on the surface of fabric through an action performed by the hand; each piece holds a record of a moment in time – an inner thought, my voice.
